In late 2014, the De Atramentis Document Inks - a range of lightfast, pigmented, mixable fountain pen friendly inks - was released. It's been a revolution for many sketchers who previously really limited to a few black waterproof inks. I've worked with a number of my own custom mixes - a
raw sienna, a burnt sienna and a mixed Jane's Grey in particular, but I use the Black and the Brown as they are all the time.
Now we have these - and other - wonderful pigmented inks to use. What I have always loved about the De Atramentis range though is that they are mixable so it is fun to create your own colours. I did a series of posts showing
two colour mixes,
three colour mixes, and
more three colour mixes,
mixing greys and
mixing with black.
Since that series, a few more colours have been added - Violet, White and Urban grey. This is the latest and was developed by Larrypost.com.au for the urban sketcher. It is about the colour of a graphite pencil so gives lovely pencil-like lines with no smudging.
Here I thought I'd update and show the range of Document ink colours mixed with Document Black and with Document White. I don't have a scanner at present so please accept my apologies for the photos. You can still see the wonderful range of tints and shades you can create.

Thank you very much for all these posts. As a fountain pen user, they have inspired me to have a go at mixing my own colours to find colours that (in my view) "zing". The one thing you haven't shown us yet is the impact of the De Atramentis Thinner which I found interesting.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great resource! I am just now discovering these inks so thanks for the information!
ReplyDeleteHi Jane. I know this is an old post, but I am wondering if the De Atrementis White ink is similar to the other colours; is it opaque ? I have found these inks (I have fog grey and sepia) to make a lovely grainy texture on lots of papers : moleskine 165gsm, stillman & birn epsilon etc… and am wondering if the white would do the same when mixed with the other colours. as I was unpleasantly surprised to find that Sennelier shellac inks (which also have a gorgeous texture,) white is texture-less smooth and opaque unlike all the other colours.
ReplyDeleteI live in the middle of the Indian Ocean and getting hold of inks is a logistical nightmare so I’m trying to research as much as I can and I haven’t seen any description of the dA white that answer my questions.
the reason I’m hunting for a textured white is actually to try find a granulating or “textured” non opaque white that I can add to inks and watercolours. I’ve had success with adding DS Lunar Black, charcoal & graphite powders, & WN liquid Indian (actual Chinese sumi ink) to darken colours and add over the top texture (I’ve added that ink to both watercolour & sheening inks and it looks amazing) but I can’t find a good white that isn’t opaque and/or flat to lighten colours for my current arctic themed project.
