Slight setback...

I've been a bit quiet here for a while as I was travelling for 5 1/2 weeks in the UK, Europe and of course to the fabulous Urban Sketchers Symposium in Chicago, thenI had another week away skiing in New Zealand. Where, as those who follow me on Facebook or Instagram would know, I broke my wrist. As it is my right, dominant, hand, it's been scary to see the X-rays and to go through surgery to have it plated and pinned, but I am on the mend and will still be heading to the West Coast of the US in late September as planned.

I'm looking forward to re-visiting San Francisco, driving down the ocean road sketching my way to Santa Barbara, driving to Gig Harbor, returning to the Daniel Smith factory in Seattle, exploring McMinnville in Oregon and meeting up with the urban sketchers from many cities including LA, SF, Seattle and Portland. Details are on my website here.

I am a bit slow one-handed on the computer and my planned full video on-line class launch has been delayed since I can't yet make the videos, but I have a number of posts in mind so you'll hear from me again soon...

  2. I saw your update on Instagram, I'm so sorry you were hurt but glad that you're on your way to healing now! I broke my right wrist when I was younger, I couldn't stand not to do any art at all while it was healing so I practiced left handed instead. I never did get very good, but it was interesting and at least now I can write somewhat legibly with my left hand? I hope your recovery goes quickly and you can get back to doing what you love soon.

  3. Hope you heal quickly and without anything unexpected.

L.A. Is a good two hours north of me so a bit much for a day trip nowadays. But if you decided to drive an hour's south to San Juan Capistrano let me know and I'll meet you there.

If you're going to drive the old Hwy 101 through Big Sur check their website first. There was a big landslide and some of the roads are closed but supposed to reopen in September. But if there is a delay, you might have to detour. I was actually thinking of driving up that way to see Hearst Castle and then do some painting in the State parks in the area but decided to put it off until next year to make sure all of the roads were open and the bridges repaired. I want to paint the bridge and the beach with the waterfall. I'll probably try next April or May, hoping we have a wet Winter and Spring.

  5. If you are going to be in McMinnville, you should plan to stop by M. Graham's headquarters in Hubbard, Oregon. Only 45-60 minutes away.

  6. Jane, I'm so sorry to hear about your broken wrist! I'm glad you're on the mend, though, and have such a wonderful trip to the west coast to look forward to. I hope you're able to sketch comfortably by September.

  9. So sorry to hear about your wrist, which I'm certain was/is painful. My daughter broke her wrist falling down stairs and it was quite the ordeal. I hope yours is smooth sailing now that your surgeon has "fixed" things. On a totally selfish note, After reading your blog I immediately signed up for your McMinville Oregon workshop in October. I am very excited. I've been reading your blog for the last two years and will feel like I'm with a celebrity. Take care. SR in Oregon.

  10. So sorry about your wrist Jane. If it's any consolation I had two broken wrists when I was in my late 20’s and after 10 weeks I was back to my drawing board. Enjoy your planned trip.

  11. Oh no! So sorry to hear about your wrist, but glad you're on the mend! Hope you have a great trip, and I don't know if you'll have time to check them out or not, but Case For Making in San Francisco is awesome! (CaseForMaking.com). I was lucky enough to take a watercolor workshop with them last time where we made our own paint -- so cool! Plus they are right near the ocean and a coffee shop that has the most amazing cinnamon toast. :) If you go say HI to them for me from Lisa in Texas xo
