Here is part 3 of my series on mixing with my Ultimate Mixing Palette colours, this time with Daniel Smith Buff Titanium. The granulating nature of this ecru colour adds a wonderful dimension to a number of watercolour mixes and creates pastel colours otherwise not possible. I especially like it for skin tones, and for the lovely sandy beach and sandstone rock effects it creates with Goethite.
All the possible mixes with buff titanium and my other 14 ultimate mixing colours are painted out in my book and eBook, but this gives a nice summary look :-)

Thank you for sharing your mixing techniques. I love to see the possibilities.
ReplyDeleteThank you Kate.
DeleteI'm loving these mixing patterns, Jane. They're invaluable. Even more so, thank you for introducing me to Buff Titanium. I added it to my palette a month or so ago and, frankly, was dubious of its usefulness. I don't think I've used it raw at all but as a mix color, it's wonderful.
ReplyDeleteI use it alone for some light marble textures but more often I mix it to create sandstone or other textures. It's terrific for Urban sketching but also perfect for flowers such as Proteas. For mushrooms you only need buff Titanium and Raw Umber :-)
DeleteHmmm...thanks, Jane. That opens my brain to other uses for the color. Very useful, indeed.
DeleteMany London buildings are made with Portland Stone BT seems to work perfectly. Also for the chateaux in the Loire Valley
ReplyDeleteI use it so much for urban sketching all over the world!
DeleteHola, aquí en Argentina no existe venden Daniel Smith. Con que mezcla de colores podrías crear el buff titanium ?
ReplyDeleteYou come close by mixing a white with raw umber and yellow ochre but it is not the same. Perhaps Dick Blick (US) or Jacksons (UK) ship to Argentina? Or try Roman Szmal watercolours in Poland - he has a buff titanium.
DeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteRoyal Talens has a Titan-Buff color in its Rembrandt Artists watercolor lineup. It's made of PW6 PBr7. Paid 10 Euro's for a 20ml tube. Rayal Talent says it's semi transparent. I found it to be opaque and none granulating.
Just in case somebody is interested.
This is amazing thanks for sharing this blog I become fan of your blogs now. This blog is so interesting and informative.
ReplyDeleteWhat mixing complement would you recommend for Buff Titanium?
ReplyDeleteIt's not really a colour I've needed to use a mixing complement, but if you consider it a slightly yellow-cream, then it would be a purple. Perhaps a really neutralised purple like Amethyst Genuine.
DeleteJust tried to order from Jackson's UK to Ireland. They're not sure why at the moment but suddenly Irish customs aren't allowing import of a whole lot of their art materials. Couldn't order Daniel Smith Buff Titanium in a tube or a pan. Brushes and paper seem to be okay but seems there's a problem with paint. For the moment I think I just bought the last tube of Buff Titanium in Ireland from Evans and that was only a 5ml tube!
ReplyDeleteI wonder why that is? And whether all colours or just specific pigments? Enjoy your precious Buff Titanium tube and make sure you shake it well when it arrives as the gum Arabic sometimes rises to the top.
DeleteThanks for your advice on the gum Arabic rising.
ReplyDeleteIt's not just Buff Titanium they can no longer send. I tried all the DS ultimate mixing palette range, tubes ,pans, and sticks, same result. Hopefully it's just a temporary blip perhaps due to Brexit customs regulations although Jackson's were sending paints with no problem up to only a couple of weeks ago or so. Fortunately I stocked up on ultimate mixing palette range while I was in the UK recently....Just forgot the Buff Titianium!
If things change or I find out what the problem is I'll drop a line to this thread.
Dick Blick has a list of what he calls Daniel Smith Granulating Watercolors. Do you know why some of the ones you have mentioned in your posts (Buff Titanium, Geothite) are not in his list? I happened upon Lunar Black and fell in love with the granulation. Now I'm looking for more, but want to be sure I'll be getting the right thing. Thank you so much for your posts. You are doing beautiful work!
